Commodores swept in double-header, eliminated from NCAA Tournament

Just two days after the death of freshman pitcher Donny Everett, the No. 1 seed Commodores dropped both games of their NCAA Regional double-header to No. 4 seed Xavier and No. 3 seed Washington. The pair of losses eliminated Vanderbilt from the NCAA Tournament, ending the program’s streak of two straight College World Series appearances.

Head coach Tim Corbin trotted out his team’s two aces to start the Regional games, turning to redshirt sophomore Jordan Sheffield against Xavier and sophomore Kyle Wright against Washington. The Musketeers and Huskies, however, had their way with Vanderbilt’s pitching staff in defeating the Commodores by scores of 15-1 and 9-8, respectively.
