The Whitecaps go into their decision day fixture knowing that no matter what happens they will finish in 8th place in the Western Conference. They could win 10-0 or they could lose 10-0 and their league position will not change. Their opponents, the Portland Timbers, have an outside chance at getting a first round bye and a pretty good chance of hosting a first round game if they win but are in the playoffs regardless. Thus we have two teams for whom the result of this game does not really matter, on paper at least.
