It appears as though the Vancouver Canucks have learned a valuable lesson after last year’s offseason debacle.
That would be to not sign free agents on the wrong side of 30 to lucrative deals, especially when you’re rebuilding. More specifically, we’re talking about the Loui Eriksson signing.
You know, the six-year contract worth $36 million that general manager Jim Benning handed him last summer? The Eriksson who scored a woeful 11 goals and 24 points which turned out to be his worst season in a decade?
Benning did say that the Canucks won’t be spending big on free agents this summer, admitting that he’s committed to giving his young players the opportunity to compete for roster spots next season.
