Especially in the early rounds of the NHL Draft, picking the best player available is the best thing to do, which is why Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Benning will not settle on a position he wants to draft for. There seems to be a consensus for who the top-six players are in this year’s draft, and if you agree that some of the available defensemen belong in that group, there might be up to eight players who would be justifiable picks at fifth overall. But what if the Canucks surprise everyone?
Despite wanting to go for the best player available, Benning made some statements on organizational need as well.
