Prospects shine, but Canucks still fall to Flames, 4-3

From a lineup with a lot of key veterans, it was the Vancouver Canucks’ prospects who shined brighter tonight in a 4-3 pre-season loss against the Calgary Flames.

Brendan Gaunce, Bo Horvat and Alex Friesen scored for Vancouver, while Jared McCann had two assists and defenceman Ben Hutton had three.

The Canucks, however, didn’t get enough from their veterans to beat a prospect-laden Flames’ lineup, and lost for the third straight game when Josh Jooris escaped Matt Bartkowski’s check and scored at 1:37 of overtime.

Minor-leaguer Friesen’s heavy wrist shot from left wing put the Canucks ahead 3-2 at 12:18 of the third period, but the Flames tied it on Markus Granlund’s goal at 13:56, a few seconds after Vancouver goalie Ryan Miller paddled Morgan Klimchuk’s shot into the air and briefly lost sight of the puck as it tumbled behind him.
