VANCOUVER – When the National Hockey League’s biggest shopping day of the year arrives on Wednesday, Jim Benning will likely be scouring the aisles of Dollarama, not Sak’s Fifth Avenue.
There does not figure to be a free-agent frenzy for the Vancouver Canucks.
With little or no salary cap space to work with, the Canucks’ general manager will likely be more interested observer than participant.
“We are up against it with the salary cap so unless we can move some money, then we’re not really in that free agent marketplace,” Benning said Monday.
The Canucks have 19 players signed -- 12 forwards, five defencemen and two goalies -- and head into free agency with only $3.
