SAN ANTONIO — The UT Arlington Mavericks employed a zone defense that confused UTSA most of the night Monday.
As a result, the Mavs built just enough cushion by the middle of the third quarter to withstand a furious comeback by the Roadrunners at the end.
Leading by 15 points, visiting Arlington from the Sun Belt Conference hung on for a 51-47 victory over UTSA at the Convocation Center.
Mistakes in ball handling proved to be the difference, with Arlington forcing UTSA of Conference USA into 26 turnovers.
“We knew we had to take care of the ball against them,” UTSA coach Luby Lichonczak said.
