SAN ANTONIO — Former UTSA coach Larry Coker expressed both surprise and sadness Tuesday that quarterback Blake Bogenschutz has been advised by the school’s medical staff to give up football because of lingering concussion-like symptoms.
“Wow,” Coker said after a reporter relayed the news Tuesday afternoon. “That is sad. He’s a great player and a great kid.”
Bogenschutz, a former all-state player in the East Texas town of Carthage, was regarded as the No. 1 recruit in Coker’s 2014 signing class. But he never reached his potential after suffering season-ending injuries two years in a row.
He broke his right (throwing) hand at mid-season in 2014 and then went down with a concussion at UTEP on Oct.
