Going under the knife for the first time is scary for anyone.For an athlete dealing with his first big-time injury, it takes on a new dimension.

That's where UTEP sophomore hammer thrower Karol Koncos was a year ago after he tore the meniscus in his knee. Usually, the injury that just requires a little arthroscopic clean-up, but this injury was far worse..

"It was a unique knee injury, they hadn't seen anything like that," UTEP coach Mika Laaksonen said. "It was a clean cut through meniscus. It had to be stitched up so the recovery was really long.
