UTEP corners ready for trial by fire Bret Bloomquist, Wochit

Going back to February when Dana Dimel introduced his second recruiting class, UTEP felt a tenuous optimism about how they restocked their position of greatest need — cornerback.

Now, against Houston Baptist’s spread, air-raid style offense that puts a premium on how quickly it can line up and throw the next pass, the Miners get to show their work.

To be sure, an FCS team coming off a 1-10 season isn’t yet like the Mike Leach-era Texas Tech teams they are trying to emulate, but they have a veteran quarterback in junior Bailey Zappe, tall, rangy receivers and an offense that averaged almost 400 yards a game last year.
