Shorthanded UTEP Miner women fall at New Mexico, 78-66

The UTEP women's basketball team couldn't overcome a steep hill without leading scorer Destiny Thurman and her backup Eliana Cabral, falling at one of the toughest places to win on their schedule in a 78-66 loss at New Mexico.

The Miners fell behind by 18 points at the midpoint of the second quarter before fighting back, but didn't get closer than seven as they fell to 7-2. Both losses came with UTEP shorthanded. New Mexico improved to 9-4 in front of 4,458 fans that could be the largest crowd the Miners face this season.

Katia Gallegos tried to keep the Miners in it with 25 points, one off the career highs she set Wednesday, seven rebounds and four assists.
