Regents approve Don Haskins statue for front of Don Haskins Center

A statue of Don Haskins will stand in front of the Don Haskins Center by the end of the year after gaining approval from the University of Texas board of regents.

The statue is a gift from Don and JoAnn Longoria, the owner of a number of Mattress Firm stores in El Paso, and will stand in front of the east entrance, facing Mesa Street.

According to the regents minutes, the statue will be sculpted by artist Brian Hanlon and will beapproximately seven feet tall and three feet in depth with an arm span of five feet, depicting the late Don Haskins in a “bear hug” pose.
