Miners, superstar Saruni, off to unpopular regional track meet

As the UTEP track team's postseason hits its midpoint this weekend at the West Preliminary Championships in Sacramento, there's an interesting question to ask.

Who is in favor of this thing? What is the constituency for what is in effect the first two rounds of the NCAA championships that conclude in June in Eugene, Ore.?

"Nobody," Miners coach Mika Laaksonen said. "Nobody wins anything. There is no team scoring, and I don't think that could save it. It's expensive; we don't get reimbursed. I don't think any AD is in favor of the meet.

"This is one of those things as a coaches association, it's never had support.
