Emmanuel Korir cruises to finals at Worlds

EUGENE, Oregon — So far this hasn't been a year of glory for former UTEP 800 meters star Emmanuel Korir, but the Worlds Athletic Championships is a chance to change all that and Korir has given himself an opportunity.

The El Pasoan, who represents Kenya and is the reigning Olympic champion in the 800, ran his fastest time of the season in Thursday's semifinal, coming from behind to win his heat and punch a ticket to Saturday night's final.

Korir's time of 1 minute, 45.42 seconds in the first of three heats was his best this year by almost half a second and sent notice there's a reason he's ranked No.
