BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — From the earliest stages of a profoundly successful UTEP women's basketball season, there was always a sense of how it would end: in a sea of missed shots.
UTEP says its offense flows from its defense, and it did help them claw all the way out of an early 17-point hole, but in a 66-54 loss to Old Dominion in the Conference USA semifinals, they simply couldn't make shots in the halfcourt offense. The Miners started 5-of-25 from the field, finished at 29 percent, and almost every time they had an open 3-pointer to generate momentum they desperately needed, it clanked.
