Bill Knight, Ray Sanchez honored at UTEP game

Between them and their 105 combined years of covering El Paso sports and UTEP athletics of every stripe, Ray Sanchez and Bill Knight have seen far more halftime celebratory ceremonies than they can remember.

But they'll remember the one Saturday at the Don Haskins Center for a good reason: They were at the center of it.

UTEP and its basketball team recognized the two deans of El Paso journalism in a first-half ceremony in front of 8,155 appreciative fans who were also enjoying the Miners' 74-67 victory over Charlotte.

"This was wonderful," said El Paso High graduate Sanchez, who began his 67-year career in 1950 at the El Paso Herald Post, later became its sports editor and now writes a column for El Paso Inc.
