When Bob Stull returned to UTEP in 1998 to run the athletic department, he didn't realize how dire some of the problems were.

He found out within weeks when eight schools bolted out of the Western Athletic Conference to form the Mountain West, leaving the Miners behind.

If that was the low point of Stull's 19-year tenure, one that came before he could get his seat warm, the highs came in fairly quick succession.

The first of three big facilities upgrades during his tenure came in 2002 with the opening of the 65,000-square foot Larry K.
