The preseason No. 4 Utah gymnastics team shook off conservative scoring and long delays between routines to beat Brigham Young,196.175-193.850, on opening night in the Huntsman Center.
The crowd of 15,023—the 14th largest in school history—got its first look at a vastly different lineup than the one that won back-to-back Pac-12 Championships in 2014 and 2015 and finished second in the nation last year.
Freshmen Sabrina Schwab and MaKenna Merrell made their Ute debuts and upperclassmen Samantha Partyka, Kari Lee and Breanna Hughes played larger roles than last year when they apprenticed behind three senior all-arounders.
