Viramontes spins Utah softball to shutout of Illinois in NCAA Regional opener

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Miranda Viramontes struck out three while allowing just three hits to help the University of Utah softball team to a 1-0 win over Illinois in the opening game of the NCAA Lexington Regional on Friday.

The sophomore pitch 6.2 innings for the Utes, coming within one out of a complete game before Katie Donovan notched her third save of the season by spinning the final strikeout with the bases loaded.

Kay Kay Fronda scored the only run of the game, coming home from second base on Anissa Urtez’s single to left field with two outs in the third inning.
