Utah kicker Matt Gay earns another year from NCAA

SALT LAKE CITY — Placekicker Matt Gay earned another year of eligibility from the NCAA, the University of Utah announced Wednesday.

Gay, who joined Utah’s football program in the summer as a walk-on, will have another year of eligibility through a clock extension related to his mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The NCAA only allows for a student-athlete to have five years of eligibility unless he or she serves a religious mission, in which they can have a hold placed on their so-called NCAA clock. Gay received a year back as a result of his missionary service during the 2015-16 academic year.
