BERKELEY, Calif. — Next man up.
That was the motto for Utah football as it played its first Pac-12 road game against Cal Saturday night. Injuries seemed to get the best of the Utes (4-1, 1-1 Pac-12) and they fell 28-23 to the Bears (3-2, 1-1) in heartbreaking fashion.
The Utes had an opportunity to win. Down 28-17 with nine minutes left in the game, Utah quickly scored a touchdown set up by Tyrone Smith’s 35-yard reception. The Bears then went three-and-out and the Utes had another chance to rally. Four minutes was plenty of time for the nation’s 18th-ranked team to get to the goal line.
