Beating BYU means stopping the run for Utah defense

SALT LAKE CITY — The Louisiana State University defense knew how to combat a BYU offense: stop the run and make the Cougars a one-dimensional team.

Last week's showing may foreshadow what the Cougars will face in the upcoming rivalry game.

The Tigers executed their game plan to a T and forced the Cougars into one of their worst offensive showings in decades Saturday. BYU managed less than 100 total yards of offense in 38 plays, with the run nonexistent, managing -5 yards rushing in BYU’s second game of the season.

Tanner Mangum tried — unsuccessfully — to get the offense into a rhythm in the passing game, but failed to make a mark.
