‘We need to find a way to pay them more’: Utah governor pushes for better salaries to retain, recruit more teachers during shortage

Gov. Gary Herbert pleaded during a Wednesday morning news conference for Utah teachers to stay in their classrooms and for those who have left to come back.

The statewide shortage of educators, he said, is dire. The simplest solution to stem the flow, he suggested, is to increase salaries.

The appeal is the latest from Herbert on education. And it comes after the governor has spent much of the summer visiting schools across the state, testing out different security features to stop would-be school shooters and speaking with counselors and administrators about what can be improved.
