UTA sprinter named Sun Belt Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week

Senior sprinter Erik Martinsson was named Sun Belt Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.

His week was highlighted by breaking the 800-meter outdoor record at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday, clocking in at 1:47.81. The previous record was held by UTA alumnus Joseph Sainah, which stood at 1:47.85 since 1989.

Martinsson’s time is the fastest recorded in the Sun Belt this season. It also ranks 10th in the NCAA West Region and is tied for 16th nationally.

The honor is his first of the outdoor track and field season and his second of 2019.
