During the winter break, the men’s and women’s basketball teams jumped into Sun Belt Conference play, inching one step closer to March Madness.
After losing a couple of key players, Krista Gerlich, women’s basketball head coach, said the Lady Mavericks have faced many challenges this season.
“Our kids are trying to build up some confidence and continuity after losing Cierra [Johnson] and Jennifer Parker,” Gerlich said. “We’ve taken a couple of hits.”
One of those changes was senior guard Shelby Richards. Gerlich said Richards has stepped up to fill Johnson’s role in a variety of ways while keeping consistent, making her a bright spot on the court.
