In its final nonconference game of the season, the men’s basketball team (9-4) secured a 77-56 victory over California Polytechnic State University Thursday at College Park Center.

“It was a hard-fought game,” head coach Scott Cross said. “We’re starting to trend in a positive direction.”

Both teams struggled on the offensive side to start off the first half, shooting under 30 percent from the field.

The Mavericks trailed for most of the half up until a 12-0 run put them ahead 18-14. After a couple of lead changes, a 3-pointer from senior forward Kevin Hervey increased UTA’s advantage.
