UTA Mavericks sneak past Loyola Marymount in season opener

A second-half comeback pushed the men’s basketball team (1-0) to defeat Loyola Marymount University 85-80 in its Homecoming season opener on Saturday at College Park Center.

Despite the win, head coach Scott Cross said the team still has much to tweak on both ends of the floor.

“We’re thankful for the victory. It was a very ugly game,” Cross said. “We didn’t deserve that game.”

The Mavericks struggled shooting from the floor 12 minutes into the game, shooting 39 percent compared to Loyola Marymount, which was sinking 60 percent of its attempts.

Trailing 24-19 with eight minutes to go in the first half, UTA closed in on the Lions.
