NEW ORLEANS – Junior guard Cierra Johnson scored 20 points and junior center Rebekah VanDijk added 19 as the Lady Mavericks defeated the University of South Alabama 65-53 on Thursday at Lakefront Arena to advance to the Sun Belt Championship semifinals.
The win was UTA’s first in postseason play since joining the Sun Belt Conference in 2013.
“It feels great,” Johnson said. “The last two years, we’ve been right there, so it feels really good to get our first win.”
The junior duo tied for the team lead with three assists each as the Mavericks finished with 13 assists total after tallying seven in the first quarter.
