Baseball falls in season opener

A grand slam in the top of the ninth lifted the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Islanders to a 9-7 victory over the UTA baseball team (0-1) on Friday at Clay Gould Ballpark.

The Islanders wasted no time jumping on the board, putting up three runs in the top of the first.

Both teams remained scoreless for the next few innings up until TAMUCC got its momentum going again with a pair of doubles, extending its lead to 4-0. A wild pitch by UTA then allowed another runner to score.

Trailing 5-0, the Mavericks responded in the bottom of the fifth with four hits to bring themselves within two.
