LOS ANGELES – USC coach Clay Helton is supposed to choose a starting quarterback Friday. So far, Helton is not only keeping the media guessing but also junior Max Browne and freshman Sam Darnold.
“He is trying to be secretive about it,” Darnold said after Monday’s practice.
I don’t blame Helton. This is not an easy decision. It goes back-and-forth daily. I think Darnold’s looked slightly better but I expect Helton to select Browne as the opening-game starter. It’s the safer choice.
During Monday’s scrimmage portion of practice at the Coliseum, Darnold enjoyed a better day.
