USC is starting to learn about Clay Helton, head coach, and here is the first lesson: Helton won’t be timid.
One day after the Trojans lost to Stanford in the Pac-12 Conference championship game, Helton on Sunday immediately fired four of USC’s nine assistant coaches, including defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox.
Also gone are offensive line coach Bob Connelly, secondary coach Keith Heyward and defensive line coach Chris Wilson. They will not coach in the Dec. 30 Holiday Bowl against Wisconsin, to which the Trojans accepted a bid Sunday, and Helton did not declare a timetable for hiring their replacements.
