SANTA CLARA – USC, with a proud heritage of producing Heisman Trophy winners, might have done it again Saturday night.
Stanford didn’t do anything to hide Christian McCaffrey. The Cardinal put him front and center, as it has all season, and the Trojans flailed and chased McCaffrey all over the field. They never really caught him, and that’s why the Cardinal is headed to the Rose Bowl while the Trojans are left to ponder what might have been.
McCaffrey, Stanford’s sophomore all-purpose tailback sensation, totaled 207 rushing yards and 105 receiving yards and even threw a touchdown pass in the Cardinal’s 41-22 victory in the Pac-12 Conference championship game in front of 58,476 at Levi’s Stadium.
