BERKELEY, Calif. — USC coach Clay Helton is fighting for his job as California coach Sonny Dykes searches to avoid another meltdown that could put his future in jeopardy.
Otherwise, it’s just another typical USC-Cal game at Memorial Stadium featuring two former top 25 teams.
Helton is riding high after last week’s victory over Utah while also providing cover for unpopular athletic director Pat Haden. But this is a must-win for him if he wants any consideration for the full-time job.
“I would be lying if I said I wasn’t interested,” he said.
Free from the shackles of being supervised by Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian, he is trying to make USC into something seen more in the 1970s.
