Only once in Jamie Maclaren's professional career has he played as an outright midfielder, yet that was the position he was expected to occupy after signing for SV Darmstadt 98 in 2017.
The Aussie striker arrived in Germany on the back of a strong season with Brisbane Roar where he struck 20 times across 28 A-League appearances.
But despite that strong return in front of goal, Maclaren arrived in Germany and was expected to fill in further back on the pitch.

"I learned in Germany they probably didn't do their research on me because when I rocked up there they tried to play me as an attacking midfielder," Maclaren told The Daily Football Show.
