Scottish Premier League (SPL) leaders Celtic have announced the signing of Indiana University left-back Andrew Gutman.
Gutman first spent several weeks on trial with Rangers and received a contract offer, but ultimately signed with Celtic.
The 22-year-old won the 2018 MAC Hermann Trophy (soccer’s equivalent of the Heisman), guided Indiana to the NCAA semifinals, and recorded 11 goals and 9 assists in 23 appearances.
Gutman was eligible to sign with the Chicago Fire as a homegrown player, but Paul Tenorio of the Athletic and several other sources reported that the Fire never offered him a contract.
