Kenneth Muguna missed Gor Mahia's first chance of the encounter after he headed wide from close range when no Zoo player was around to mark him in the 19th minute.
A foul on Clifton Miheso in the 24th minute was another chance for the reigning champions to open the score but the visitors quickly cleared the incoming free-kick by Muguna.
