West Hartford’s Suburban Pharmacy to pay $150,000 penalty after losing thousands of doses of Xanax

A West Hartford pharmacy must pay a $150,000 penalty after the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency investigated the loss of thousands of doses of anxiety medication almost two years ago.

Suburban Pharmacy reported losing more than 6,000 doses of alprazolam, commonly known by the brand name Xanax, in October 2018, prompting a DEA audit of its entire inventory that discovered discrepancies of more than 22,000 doses of drugs, according to federal prosecutors.

The West Main street pharmacy dispenses prescription drugs to about 200 long-term care facilities, such as assisted living homes or in-patient treatment programs. An internal investigation by the group concluded an employee had stolen the missing doses, but it was not immediately clear Tuesday whether a criminal investigation into the theft is ongoing.
