West Hartford police officer recounts rescue of elderly woman caught in burning house

WEST HARTFORD — When West Hartford Police Officer Miguel Godoy pulled up at a Fuller Drive house fire, there was no other help nearby and a young man was frantically looking for someone to get his elderly grandmother out.

A half-minute later, Godoy and the woman’s grandson were working together in the living room, guiding the disoriented woman through thick smoke and safely out to the lawn.

“I’ve never really appreciated the strength of smoke before,” said Godoy, who won praise from police commanders after the Sept. 23 fire.

At police headquarters this week, Godoy recounted just how abruptly his patrol shift that night went from routine to dramatic.
