West Hartford gets police review board, but without wide-ranging power

When West Hartford established a civilian review board for its police this week, it landed roughly in the middle of how Connecticut communities are handling the idea.

Since June, New Britain rejected that kind of police oversight, Coventry decided against trying to set up a regional police review board, and a campaign in Enfield appears to have sputtered.

But in New London, an ad hoc committee just three weeks ago proposed a board of civilians to review police internal affairs cases. Hartford this month is seeking to name a full-time staff worker to strengthen its board.

West Hartford appeared to bridge partisan politics Tuesday night when its council unanimously endorsed creating a civilian review board.
