Vernon police chief, a lifelong public safety officer, to retire in July

VERNON — Vernon Police Chief James Kenny, a former Glastonbury cop with a total of 40 years in law enforcement, said Monday he will retire in July.

“Between covid and the police accountability law and the pressure of the job, it was just time for me to make a move,” Kenny, 61, said.

He joined the Vernon force as a captain in 2006 and was named chief the next year. Before that, Kenny worked for 21 years for the Glastonbury police, retiring as a detective lieutenant.

The Rocky Hill native had uncles in the New York City and Boston police forces and “caught the bug” to be a cop from them.
