A blaze that injured seven people in the Rockville section of Vernon Sunday was caused by unattended candles, the fire marshal said Monday.

The fire at 26 Union St. left the 22-unit apartment building uninhabitable. The American Red Cross helped 13 families - 16 adults and two children - with immediate needs, and the local Cornerstone Foundation also reached out to families to provide shelter, food and clothing.

First responders answering an alarm at about 10:45 a.m. found heavy fire coming from the second floor, with several occupants hanging from windows. Most of the injuries were due to smoke inhalation.
