Two seriously injured in motorcycle crash that shut down I-84 in East Hartford

A motorcyclist and his passenger were seriously injured, and I-84 was shut down, after a crash Thursday in East Hartford, state police said.

The crash happened about 2:50 p.m. in the west lanes near Exit 57. Miguel Angel Berrios, 53, of Willimantic was riding a 2007 Honda VT600 motorcycle with his passenger, Miltia Mercado, 59, of New Britain, when a 2020 Jeep Compass struck them from behind, they said.

Berrios and Mercado were thrown from the motorcycle, police said. Berrios was taken to Hartford Hospital and Mercado was taken to Saint Francis Hospital.

The driver of the Jeep, Marissa Christina Santiago, 25, of Stafford Springs, had what appeared to be a minor injury.
