Stonington police apply for arrest warrants in alleged racist attack on Black hotel clerk in Mystic

Stonington police have filed arrest warrant applications to charge the white New York couple accused of beating a Black hotel clerk in Mystic last week.

The couple is accused of using racial slurs and punching, kicking and stomping on 59-year-old Crystal Caldwell last Friday morning at the Quality Inn on Whitehall Avenue in Mystic.

Attorney John Strafaci, who is representing Caldwell, confirmed police have filed for the arrest warrants but said he could not comment further Wednesday and Stonington police have not released any additional information about the potential charges.

Caldwell and Strafaci have criticized the delay in charges, questioning why the couple was not arrested the day of the incident, but Stonington police defended their investigation Wednesday and have said they wanted an “ironclad” case.
