Danbury State’s Attorney Stephen J. Sedensky III ruled Friday that an Ansonia police officer was justified in fatally shooting a knife-wielding man in January.

Michael Gregory, 30, of Naugatuck, was the first person to be fatally shot by police in Connecticut in 2020.

Officers responded to a report on Jan. 2 by Gregory’s girlfriend that he was in her home on Myrtle Avenue in violation of a no-contact protective order. Body camera footage showed Gregory refusing to drop a knife and charging at police when a stun gun failed to subdue him. He yelled to police that they were going to have to shoot him.
