Erratic driving appears to be the cause of a crash in East Windsor Sunday that killed the motorcyclist and left his passenger with critical injuries, police said.

The crash happened late Sunday afternoon when the speeding Suzuki struck the side of a car that was pulling out of Sofia Plaza at the intersection of routes 140 and 5, they said.

Matthew Mierez was killed and his wife, Maria Mierez, was taken to Hartford Hospital, where she was listed in critical, but stable, condition. Det. Sgt. Matt Carl said.

Witnesses told police the motorcyclist was revving his engine in an east lane of Route 140, or North Road, while he was stopped at a red light.
