South Windsor police chief to retire

SOUTH WINDSOR — South Windsor Police Chief Scott P. Custer, a 31-year department veteran, announced he will retire to devote time to his family.

Custer, who turns 53 on Wednesday, is set to leave on Sept. 18, the 16th anniversary of his marriage.

Custer said he applied to become a police officer after ride-alongs with cops in his hometown of Manchester. The Manchester High School Class of 1985 graduate said he liked the team work and camaraderie he saw and the promise of serving people.

He has worked in all aspects of police work, including patrol, criminal investigations, public information, narcotics, evidence, recruiting and field training.
