The future of two multi-family houses in the Rockville section of Vernon is uncertain after they were heavily damaged Monday in a fire that displaced 25 people and killed at least three pets.

Neither the larger house at 80-82 Union St. nor the one behind it at 33 Ward St. is safe enough to be lived in, Fire Marshal Daniel Wasilewski said Tuesday. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
