Rhode Island sergeant dies in Connecticut skydiving accident

An East Greenwich, R.I. police sergeant died in a skydiving accident in Killingly over the weekend, the department said.

Sgt. Christopher Callan died Saturday morning. He was a 15-year department veteran and a member of the Rhode Island National Guard, the department said in a Facebook post Monday.

Troopers from the Troop D barracks of the Connecticut State Police were called to Danielson Airport in the Danielson section of town about 10:50 a.m., state police said. They were told a skydiver had been injured in a rough landing on the airfield.

The skydiver, who wasn’t named in a news release, was taken to Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, where he was pronounced dead, according to the state police.
