Retired New Haven lieutenant to join Hartford police as second assistant chief

HARTFORD — Police Chief Jason Thody has hired retired New Haven Lt. Kenny Howell as a new assistant chief of Hartford police, the department announced Wednesday.

Howell, of New Haven, has spent 24 years in law enforcement, primarily in New Haven and the last three as police chief in Millbury, Massachusetts. He will receive an annual salary of $136,000 and fill a position left vacant since Thody was promoted from assistant chief to interim chief in April 2019.

“Kenny’s deep experience in a community similar to Hartford, both growing up and serving in the police department, will help him hit the ground running and I am looking forward to having him as part of our senior team at the Hartford Police Department,” Thody, who gained the permanent chief position in February, said in a news release.
