Protesters occupy street outside Bridgeport police headquarters and call for defunding police

Weeks of rallying shifted over the weekend into days of occupation outside the Bridgeport police headquarters as dozens of people continue to press city officials to cut the police budget.

Those gathered in Bridgeport, living in tents along a small stretch of Congress Street since Saturday, said they believe that abolishing police is the only way to stop police violence.

Their voices join a growing number in Connecticut and across the country that are calling on municipalities and state governments to drastically cut spending on policing amid concerns over police violence and killings.
